NLC President, Joe Ajaero, outlined the rationale behind the demand during an interview on Arise Television, emphasizing that any new minimum wage must align with the economic realities and indicators of the nation.

Ajaero pointed out that the continuous depreciation of the naira against the dollar and the persistent rise in inflation necessitate a significant adjustment in the minimum wage. The initial proposal of N200,000, he stated, has become untenable in light of the escalating prices of essential commodities and the inflationary pressures gripping the economy.

Highlighting the soaring cost of living, exemplified by skyrocketing prices of food items like rice, which now commands prices between N60,000 to N70,000 per bag, Ajaero stressed the need for a minimum wage that ensures basic necessities like transportation for at least a week.

He underscored the critical role of these economic factors in shaping labour demands and emphasized that negotiations with the federal government would be contingent upon addressing these pressing issues.

In response to the nationwide strike notice issued by organized labour, Ajaero reiterated the necessity for the federal government’s commitment to addressing the concerns raised by workers. While the government has urged against embarking on strikes, the labour union remains steadfast in its quest for economic justice and fair wages for workers.

Regarding the provision of grains as palliative measures for food insecurity, Ajaero criticized the government’s approach as inadequate and insulting to Nigerians, underscoring the urgency for meaningful interventions to address the prevalent challenges faced by citizens.

As negotiations between labour unions and the government continue, the call for a substantial increase in the minimum wage reflects the determination of workers to secure a better standard of living amidst prevailing economic hardships.
