NLC President Decries Government’s Grain Palliative, Slams Lack Of Trust In Policy Implementation
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has criticized the Federal Government’s approach to addressing food insecurity, labeling it an insult to Nigerians to distribute grains as palliatives, likening citizens to pigeons….READ ALSO NLC President Unveil Potential Demand For ₦1 Million Minimum Wage
Expressing his disappointment in an interview with Arise News, Ajaero emphasized the need for more substantial measures to combat hunger and poverty in the country.
“I feel sad when we talk of the federal government giving people grains as if we are giving grains to pigeons and all these other birds,” Ajaero remarked. “That is a serious insult to Nigerians. I think that we should think of something else.
Ajaero highlighted the issue of trust in government promises, questioning the consistency and effectiveness of past commitments. He expressed concern over the lack of clarity in policy implementation, particularly regarding agreements with organized labor and Nigerians at large.
Furthermore, Ajaero addressed the impending review of the minimum wage, suggesting that the demand for a one-million-naira minimum wage might be justified given the current economic climate.
“The demand of labor is equally dependent on what is happening in society,” Ajaero explained. “Our demands will be based on the cost-of-living index.”
He criticized the government’s delay in setting up the wage review committee and expressed skepticism about the committee’s composition, particularly given the inclusion of governors who have failed to implement the existing minimum wage.
With the expiration of the old minimum wage approaching in April, Ajaero urged the government to prioritize effective negotiation and consider the rising cost of living in determining a fair wage for Nigerian workers.
