NLC And TUC Set Deadline For NERC To Reverse Electricity Tariff Increase
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have issued a stern ultimatum to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), demanding the reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike by May 12, under the threat of severe industrial action. In a joint letter dated May 3, 2024, addressed to the Chairman/CEO of NERC and copied to various government officials and electricity distribution companies, NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo expressed grave concerns over the tariff hike. They emphasized that the decision is morally reprehensible, disregards statutory obligations, and exploits the difficulties faced by Nigerians.
The letter highlights NERC’s regulatory role and accuses the commission of forsaking its duty by acquiescing to the tariff hike, which benefits the electricity industry at the expense of the masses. It denounces NERC’s collaboration with distribution and generating companies and demands an immediate reversal of the tariff hike to N65/kWh, cessation of discriminatory practices, and restoration of statutory supremacy.
The NLC and TUC, representing Nigerian workers and masses, stand united in denouncing the injustice and vow swift and decisive action if NERC fails to comply by May 12, including mobilizing members to occupy NERC and distribution companies’ offices nationwide until justice is served.
