Northern Elders React To Kaduna Village Bombing

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed serious concern over the accidental bombing of Tudun Biri in Kaduna State by the Nigerian Army on Sunday. The forum is demanding a comprehensive investigation into the incident, which resulted in the loss of lives of numerous innocent civilians.

Mallam Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the Director of Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, issued a statement on Tuesday acknowledging the efforts of the Kaduna State government in responding to the situation.

He also mentioned the government’s commitment to compensating the victims of the accidental strike.

“However beyond compensation for the victims, a thorough investigation is essential to ensure justice for the affected civilians, prevent future occurrences, and uphold the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.

“By identifying the causes and circumstances surrounding the incident, the investigation can determine whether any negligence or misconduct occurred, holding those responsible accountable.

“This will provide a sense of closure and compensation to the victims, fostering trust between the military and the civilian population,” Suleiman said.

The NEF emphasized the importance of conducting a comprehensive investigation into the accidental bombing to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future. According to the NEF spokesman, a thorough analysis of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy is crucial for identifying any systemic failures, training gaps, or inadequate protocols that may have contributed to the accident.

The NEF believes that with this understanding, the military can implement necessary reforms, including improved coordination, enhanced intelligence gathering, and stricter adherence to rules of engagement. These measures would contribute to minimizing the risk of accidental strikes on civilian populations in conflict zones.

“These measures will minimize the risk of accidental bombings and protect civilian lives during military operations. An investigation aligns with the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law.

“NEF condoles the families of the affected civilians as well the Kaduna State government for the unfortunate and regrettable incident,” Suleiman said.
