One of them, Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, recently demonstrated his authority while addressing the rejection of nearly half the commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for confirmation.

Obasa boldly stated that the House’s decision to reject 17 out of 39 nominees was final: “We said no, and it remains so.” In a striking display of confidence, he rhetorically asked, “Do I look like someone who can be threatened?” He then issued a veiled warning to the governor, referring to Sanwo-Olu’s office as a “glass house” that should avoid throwing stones.

The root of the rejection, Obasa declared, was political preservation. “I am trying to protect my party and will continue to do so,” he said, unapologetically prioritizing politics over technocratic qualifications.
