The lawmakers unanimously voted for his removal, citing ethical breaches and a lack of effective leadership. Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency 1, described the impeachment as essential to safeguarding the integrity of the Assembly. “We’ve had enough,” Tobun stated, emphasizing the collective nature of the decision.

The motion for impeachment was introduced by Femi Saheed of Kosofe Constituency, who accused Obasa of high-handedness, inciting division among members, and mismanaging Assembly funds. Saheed criticized Obasa’s leadership style, calling it “authoritarian and undemocratic” and stating it undermined good governance principles.

Obasa, who has represented Agege Constituency 1 since 2007 and served as Speaker since 2015, was absent during the plenary session as he was reportedly out of the country. His deputy, Mojisola Meranda, chaired the session and has since been appointed as the new Speaker. Mojeed Fatai was elected as Deputy Speaker.

The impeachment follows allegations of corruption against Obasa, including claims of allocating ₦17 billion for the construction of a gate for the Assembly. Although Obasa has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, lawmakers and anti-corruption advocates continue to demand greater accountability in the Assembly’s affairs.
