Obasanjo’s comments come as a challenge to the notion that divine intervention is behind every leader’s rise to power. When asked about his own path to leadership, he clarified, “Most leaders are indeed prepared and placed by God, and their chances of success are greater when that happens. But not all leaders are made by God; some may be made by Satan.”

The former president referenced the biblical story of Job to emphasize that Satan too has power. He explained, “Satan was granted power, and his influence must not be underestimated. We must acknowledge that Satan has the ability to play a role in who becomes a leader.”

Obasanjo’s statements come shortly after the Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, expressed similar sentiments. Kukah had critiqued Nigeria’s leadership, arguing that leaders such as President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari were unprepared for their roles and had come to power by accident. He lamented the lack of adequate leadership knowledge in Nigeria, which he believes is crippling the nation’s democracy.
