During a press briefing in Benin City, held in conjunction with a visit by Edo North leaders, Governor Obaseki explained that Deputy Governor Shaibu has been actively engaging with prominent figures at both the national and state levels of the APC, seeking a pathway to join their party. The governor remarked that Shaibu is close to finalizing his move to the APC.

Obaseki emphasized, “I want to make it clear that I am not aware of any plot or scheme to impeach Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have looked into it, and there is no such plan.”

He continued, expressing his surprise and disappointment regarding the court action taken by the deputy governor, given the substantial autonomy Obaseki had afforded him in his role. Obaseki commented, “It’s bewildering for him to take such action.”

Obaseki highlighted the recent developments, stating that Shaibu’s move to seek a court order is part of his effort to bring to fruition the steps he has already undertaken. Obaseki recalled a past incident involving local government chairmanship candidates and their imposition, which faced resistance from the local community. Despite that, Obaseki acquiesced to the community’s wishes. However, he noticed that shortly thereafter, Shaibu was seen in Abuja with members of the opposition party on social media.

Obaseki shared that he had heard rumors for several months that Shaibu was engaging in discussions with members of another party due to uncertainty surrounding his candidacy within the PDP for the 2024 gubernatorial election.
