How 10 Officers On Illegal Duties Along Badagry-Seme Border Expressway Were Arrested

According to police sources, the arrest was executed by investigators from the Zonal X-squad Zone 2 in Onikan, Lagos, in response to numerous complaints by individuals traversing the route.

These complaints had been brought to the attention of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) for Zone 2, Muhammed Ari Ali, and they primarily focused on the actions of security personnel, particularly police officers.

During a press briefing, Ali expressed his concern over the immense difficulties endured by Nigerians, particularly businesspeople, due to the behavior of officers at various checkpoints.

Ali stated, “Upon assuming my role as AIG, I was inundated with reports about the activities of security agents operating illegal checkpoints with the intention of extortion. Consequently, we constituted a team of investigators from the Zonal X-squad to conduct an inquiry and provide a report. I can confirm that over ten police officers have been apprehended and are currently under custody for appropriate disciplinary measures. Interestingly, many of these individuals are not currently serving as police officers either at the border or in Badagry.”

He further elaborated, “They simply go to those locations, set up roadblocks, and proceed to collect money from travelers and legitimate business operators. We have established internal protocols for addressing such issues.

Our efforts to address this concern will continue, as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun has engaged in discussions with the Controller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, to forge a collaborative approach in order to curb this problem on the route.”
