Seyi made this request yesterday during the inaugural Alhaji Lateef Jakande annual memorial lecture for 2023, which was organized by the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE) and held in Lagos.

In attendance at the event were notable figures including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Governor of Ogun State Olusegun Osoba, former military Governor of Old Imo State Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retired), and former Managing Director of The Guardian Lade Bonuola.

Themed “Lateef Jakande: The Man, His Journalism, His Politics,” the event saw these prominent personalities paying tribute to the first civilian governor of Lagos State, hailing his contributions as both an accomplished journalist and a dedicated politician.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who served as the Special Guest of Honour, sent his Deputy, Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, to represent him. The governor praised Jakande’s remarkable character, expressing, “Jakande was a person of admirable qualities, and his departure left us saddened. We must acknowledge God’s blessing for giving us such a man. It’s truly commendable that the NGE chose to honor him.”

Osoba shared his perspective, stating, “He was the sole author of Nigerian Tribune’s editorials. No government during that era could disregard the influence of the Nigerian Tribune’s editorials.”

Representing the keynote speaker, Felix Adenaike, Bayo Osiyemi acknowledged Jakande’s unparalleled literary talent, particularly evident in his editorials.

Bonuola characterized Jakande as an extraordinary individual, reflecting, “Under his guidance, I learned how to deepen my understanding of journalism. I discovered that the newsroom is a place where learning never ends. You must have knowledge about various subjects and expertise in one.”

Nwachukwu depicted Jakande as quiet yet determined, affirming, “He inspired us to be courageous. Always remember the remarkable figure known as Jakande in everything you do.”
