Obaseki’s ‘Do Or Die’ Rhetoric: A Threat To Edo’s Stability
Obaseki’s ‘Do Or Die’ Rhetoric: A Threat To Edo’s StabilityByAdolphus Arebanmhen AletorGovernor Godwin Obaseki’s recent statement at the PDP rally, labelling the upcoming governorship election as a “do or die affair,” is alarming and unacceptable. This inflammatory language puts the people of Edo State in harm’s way and confirms concerns about his administration’s lack of humanity.
As the leader of Edo State, Obaseki has a responsibility to protect his citizens, not incite violence. His words are particularly disturbing, given his position of power and past beneficiaries of the people’s goodwill. Elections are transient, and Obaseki has twice benefited from the people’s trust.
Why is Obaseki threatening the very people he has sworn to protect? What is he hiding? His desperation and loss of decency are evident in his incendiary statements, including past threats to destabilize Nigeria.
Leaders owe citizens basic necessities, not empty promises or violence. Obaseki’s administration has failed to deliver, leaving Edo people emotionally drained. Instead of intimidating them, he should respect their right to choose their next governor.
Every leader faces a day of reckoning. Obaseki’s time has come. Having served with ‘wooden plates,’ he should not expect a ‘golden platter.’ Let the people decide their future without fear of reprisal. End
