Okogbe Challenges Edo Assembly’s Suspension Decision, Label The Movement As Illegal

The suspension, announced on Monday, came amidst allegations of a plot to impeach the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, and other principal officers. Okogbe and his colleagues were accused of being influenced by external forces to disrupt the House’s leadership and of bringing native doctors into the House at midnight.

In response, Okogbe argued that due process was not followed and that their suspension lacked legality. He emphasized that according to the rules of the House and the Constitution, all decisions must be reached through a resolution, including the motion being moved, seconded, and voted upon. However, in this instance, the Speaker unilaterally pronounced their suspension without following these procedures.

Okogbe highlighted the absence of a formal motion, a seconder, or a voting process, and noted the uproar that ensued before the Speaker abruptly adjourned the session. He asserted that the lack of adherence to due process rendered the suspension invalid.

Regarding the allegation of involvement with ‘Juju,’ Okogbe clarified that while the Speaker claimed to possess a video showing a member accompanied by someone resembling a traditional healer, he personally had no connection to the incident. The member in question explained that he visited to check on his parked vehicle due to security concerns, and his encounter with a constituent offering prayers with kolanut had no sinister intent.

Okogbe’s challenge to the suspension underscores the contentious nature of the accusations and the need for adherence to procedural fairness within the Edo State House of Assembly.
