Ola Aina Confident Super Eagles Will Qualify For 2026 FIFA World Cup

Nigerian defender, Ola Aina, remains optimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s challenging position in the current qualifiers.

The Super Eagles were unable to secure a victory in their recent match against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, settling for a 1-1 draw. This result has left Nigeria in a difficult spot, currently sitting fourth in Group C, six points behind group leaders South Africa.

Following the draw with Zimbabwe, Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle defended his tactical decisions, which included deploying a 4-4-2 formation that required players to step into unfamiliar roles. Aina, typically a right-back, was positioned as left-back, while Ademola Lookman, primarily a winger, was used in a central role, and Samuel Chukwueze was shifted into the midfield.

Chelle explained his strategy, saying, “I wanted to implement a diamond formation, as I believe it allows us to find Lookman between the lines in the number 10 space. We created chances, which shows this system has potential.” He acknowledged the challenges posed by the unconventional positioning but praised the adaptability of his players. “Chukwueze played centrally, but at times he moved wide. Ola Aina adapted well to the left side and performed his role effectively,” he added.
