Ondo Assembly Insists: No Going Back On Speaker’s Impeachment
The leadership crisis rocking the Ondo State House of Assembly has deepened, with the Assembly’s spokesperson, Olatunji Ifabiyi, insisting that lawmakers have not abandoned moves to impeach the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji.
Ifabiyi, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), dismissed reports suggesting that lawmakers had shelved the impeachment plan, describing such claims as misinformation.
According to Ireporter Online, the Assembly spokesperson maintained that the process to remove Oladiji from office was still ongoing despite intervention efforts by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other political stakeholders seeking to resolve the dispute.
Ifabiyi explained that the governor’s engagement with some lawmakers had not halted the impeachment proceedings, stressing that certain members remained determined to install a new Speaker.
“We have been hearing reports that we have stopped the process; that is not correct. It is misinformation. We are still on it. He cannot continue as our Speaker,” Ifabiyi said.
He added that discussions between Governor Aiyedatiwa and some members of the Assembly would not prevent lawmakers from pursuing their position, declaring that there was “no going back” on the impeachment move.
The latest development comes amid heightened tension within the Assembly following the reported invasion of its complex by suspected thugs on Thursday.
Reports indicate that the individuals involved were allegedly from Ondo town, the constituency of the embattled Speaker, further raising concerns over the escalating political crisis within the state legislature.
