Ooni Sets Record Straight On Alleged Baba Ijesha Chieftaincy Claim

According to Ireporter Online, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has dismissed reports claiming that Nollywood actor and comedian, James Olanrewaju, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, was conferred with a chieftaincy title during a recent visit to the palace.

The monarch clarified that Baba Ijesha and his wife were received at the Ile Oodua Palace on Wednesday to celebrate the birth of their son, during which he extended gestures of goodwill, including the presentation of a brand-new car and cash gifts as a show of fatherly affection and royal generosity.

The Ooni, through a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, stressed that the visit did not include any form of traditional title conferment.

The statement further explained that the phrase “Awada Konge Oduwa,” which the actor later referenced on social media as a chieftaincy title, was only a light-hearted remark made during a relaxed interaction, and not an official installation or traditional recognition.

It emphasized that chieftaincy titles in Ile-Ife are not conferred casually, noting that they follow strict customs, consultations, and traditional rites which were not carried out during the visit.

While acknowledging Baba Ijesha as a deserving indigene of Ile-Ife who may still be considered for honour in the future, the palace firmly stated that no title was granted.

The Ooni also urged the public and media outlets to disregard reports suggesting that the actor was installed with any chieftaincy title, reaffirming his commitment to preserving the dignity and sanctity of the traditional institution.

He further reiterated his dedication to celebrating outstanding sons and daughters of Ile-Ife and upholding the cultural heritage of the Oduduwa race.
