Osun: APC Raises Concerns Over Adeleke’s Cybercrime Panel

According to the Commissioner for Information and Public Engagement, Kolapo Alimi, the initiative aims to cleanse the political atmosphere and ensure governance and political activities are conducted with integrity and honesty.

The surge in fake news, impacting both the ruling party and the opposition, prompted the formation of the committee, housed within the Ministry of Justice and comprising journalists and legal practitioners. Its mandate is to aggressively tackle the spread of fake news, applying relevant sections of the Cybercrime Act of 2015.

However, APC state chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, sees the initiative differently, viewing it as an attempt to stifle dissent and suppress opposition voices. He accused Governor Adeleke’s administration of using dubious contracts and draconian measures to silence critics.

Lawal warned of legal challenges against policies deemed repressive, asserting the APC’s role as a credible opposition. He accused Governor Adeleke of introducing the committee to deflect attention from corruption allegations within his administration.

Despite these concerns, the Osun State Government affirms the committee’s necessity in fostering respectful and lawful public discourse, particularly on digital platforms.

The Cybercrime Action Committee is scheduled to convene its first meeting amidst this backdrop of political tension and accusations of government overreach.
