Sources reveal that Ugbome, hailing from Etsako and a prominent member of the Legacy Coalition within the Edo chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is being considered as a replacement for Shaibu.

According to reports from the Nation, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s choice of Ugbome has garnered support from the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dan Orbih, and his followers, ahead of the gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

Obaseki’s decision is believed to be a strategic move to consolidate support in the Edo North Senatorial District, where former Governor and APC National Chairman, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, holds significant influence.

Ugbome, originating from Ekperi in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo, is seen as capable of securing victory for PDP’s gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in Edo North senatorial district, thereby diminishing Oshiomhole and Shaibu’s influence.

This move is expected to bolster Ighodalo’s campaign, especially considering the voting dynamics in Edo Central and Edo South, where his running mate, Osarodion Ogie, hails from.

Ugbome, a Law graduate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and former Chairman of Etsako Central Local Government Council, is perceived within Obaseki’s camp as instrumental in securing support from key figures like Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, a significant former member of the House of Representatives, ensuring unity within Edo PDP.

A seven-member probe panel, led by Justice Stephen Omonua (rtd.), was established by the Edo Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, on March 25 to investigate allegations against Shaibu. The panel concluded its hearings on Friday and is expected to submit its report soon for the state’s lawmakers to consider Shaibu’s impeachment.
