The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shows no signs of resolution as political heavyweights clash ahead of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for February 29.

Amid growing calls for unity and effective opposition, the power tussles between the National Working Committee (NWC), former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed are threatening to derail the much-anticipated NEC meeting.

Root of the Crisis

The ongoing discord centers around unresolved leadership disputes, regional party control, and policy disagreements. Wike, now serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under the APC government, has been accused by former presidential candidate Dele Momodu of exacerbating the crisis due to grievances stemming from the 2022 presidential primaries.

Governors’ Showdown

The tension between Wike and Mohammed escalated following the PDP Governors Forum’s support for Fubara. Wike criticized Mohammed’s opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, prompting a fiery exchange. Mohammed labeled Wike a “transactional politician,” while Wike dismissed Mohammed as a “political liability” and accused him of greed for holding the forum’s chairmanship.

Challenges Ahead of NEC Meeting

The PDP’s Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led National Reconciliation Committee, tasked with bridging internal divides, has struggled to deliver results. Despite being formed in 2024, the committee’s efforts have faltered, with critical disputes still unresolved, including:

• Rivers State Leadership: A court ruling affirming Governor Fubara’s faction as legitimate has split the NWC, with Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba accepting the verdict, while Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and others oppose it.
• National Secretary Dispute: The battle between Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye over the position of National Secretary remains contentious, with the Supreme Court yet to resolve the matter.

Outlook

With deep-seated divisions and postponed NEC meetings fueling frustrations, the PDP risks further fragmentation. Analysts warn that without urgent reconciliation, the party may fail to mount an effective challenge against the APC government.
