Pelosi Stirs Controversy: Democrats Might Have Done Better If Biden Exited Earlier
Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has indicated that Democrats might have seen a more favorable outcome in Tuesday’s election if President Joe Biden had dropped out of the race earlier.Pelosi’s comments come amid a wave of criticism within the...CONTINUE READING…
Democratic Party following their defeat in the presidential election and the potential loss of both chambers of Congress.
Reflecting on the party’s strategy, Pelosi said, “Had the president stepped aside earlier, there might have been other candidates in the race.”
This statement follows reports suggesting that Pelosi had led efforts within the Democratic Party to encourage Biden to withdraw from the race. Biden eventually exited in late July after facing mounting pressure and a lackluster debate performance against Donald Trump. Upon stepping down, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. However, Harris went on to lose decisively to President-elect Trump in the election.
In an interview with the New York Times, Pelosi noted, “The expectation was that if the president stepped aside, there would be an open primary.” She implied that such a scenario could have given Harris a better chance to solidify her candidacy and improve her standing in the general election.
Pelosi suggested that a competitive primary, with multiple Democratic candidates vying for the nomination, could have helped Harris prepare more effectively for the election. However, she acknowledged, “But we don’t know that. That didn’t happen. We live with what happened.”
Pelosi was re-elected to her 20th term in the House on Tuesday. Reflecting on the aftermath of the election, she noted that Biden’s endorsement of Harris made it nearly impossible for a primary to take place at that stage. “If it had been much earlier, it would have been different,” she said.
Harris’s aides have also pointed the finger at Biden for the party’s loss, claiming that his failure to exit the race earlier contributed to their defeat. An aide remarked, “We ran the best campaign we could, considering Joe Biden was president. Joe Biden is the singular reason Kamala Harris and Democrats lost tonight.”
