Fela Kuti Led To My Expulsion: Director Andy Boyo Shares His Unforgettable School Days

Lagos in 1997 at the age of 58. Known as the pioneer of Afrobeat, Fela created a genre that blended West African rhythms with American funk and jazz.

Boyo is now set to bring Fela’s remarkable life to the big screen with a highly anticipated biographical film. After three years of meticulous planning, Boyo has secured the music rights and will begin filming in 2025 across Nigeria, the UK, and the US.

The film is rumored to feature a large cast, including 27 actresses portraying Fela’s wives. Boyo, known for successful projects like “Untamed” and “Spirit of Assassins,” will serve as director, writer, and producer of the film.

Sharing his deep admiration for Fela, Boyo said, “This project is a labor of love.” He recounted, “Fela has always been my passion. I was expelled from Glorious College, Ibadan, for sneaking out to watch him perform at the University of Ibadan’s ‘Havana Night.’ Fela was my mentor, and I admired his music and character.”

The film will portray Fela’s life, struggles, and triumphs as the Afrobeat icon. With Boyo’s dedication and expertise, the project promises to make a powerful impact on African cinema, challenging industry norms and celebrating Fela’s legacy.
