Jorge Messi, the father of Argentina and Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68, according to multiple reports from Argentine media.

According to Ireporter Online, Jorge had been dealing with health challenges for some time and was receiving medical treatment in Rosario, where he reportedly passed away.

Concerns about his health had intensified in recent months after Lionel Messi became emotional following Argentina’s World Cup fixture against Algeria in June. After scoring during the match, the football star broke down and later explained that his reaction was unrelated to football and that he had been experiencing some difficult days.

The incident prompted widespread speculation about Jorge’s condition, although the Messi family maintained privacy regarding his health. The family subsequently appealed to the public and media to respect their privacy while Jorge underwent treatment.

Lionel Messi was also absent from the MLS All-Star Game in late July, with reports indicating that he had travelled to Argentina to be with his father. He later returned to action for Inter Miami.

Jorge’s death was publicly acknowledged by Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys on Saturday, August 8. The Rosario-based club expressed sadness over his passing and recognised his important role in Lionel Messi’s extraordinary football journey.

Newell’s described Jorge as a devoted supporter of the club and a key figure behind his son’s development, highlighting the guidance and support he provided throughout Lionel’s rise from Rosario to global football stardom.

The club also extended its condolences to Lionel Messi, his mother Celia Cuccittini, his siblings and the wider family.

Jorge played an important role during the early stages of Lionel’s career. Lionel joined Newell’s youth academy as a child before moving to Barcelona’s youth system in Spain. Jorge accompanied his son during the early period of that transition while other members of the family remained in Rosario.

As Lionel’s career progressed, Jorge became increasingly involved in his professional affairs and served as one of his representatives. Although he largely remained away from the spotlight, he continued to play an important role behind the scenes as his son established himself as one of football’s most accomplished players.
