WAFCON Shock: Cameroon Knock Out Super Falcons, World Cup Ticket Delayed

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their quarter-final clash.

According to Ireporter Online, Nyadjou scored the decisive goal in the 19th minute, giving Cameroon an early advantage that the Indomitable Lionesses successfully protected until the final whistle.

Nigeria responded strongly after conceding and created several opportunities in search of an equaliser, but Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina produced an outstanding performance to deny the Super Falcons.

Bihina made eight crucial saves throughout the encounter as Cameroon’s defence withstood sustained pressure from the Nigerian side.

The Super Falcons increased their attacking intensity as the match progressed but were unable to find the breakthrough, with Cameroon maintaining their narrow advantage to secure a place in the WAFCON semi-finals.

The defeat brings Nigeria’s campaign at the continental tournament to an end at the quarter-final stage and means the Super Falcons have missed out on one of Africa’s four automatic qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Under the qualification format, the four nations that reach the WAFCON semi-finals automatically qualify for the global tournament in Brazil.

Nigeria, however, still have a chance of reaching the 2027 World Cup through the African play-off route. The Super Falcons will join the other three quarter-final losers in the play-off stage, with the successful team advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs for another opportunity to secure a World Cup ticket.

The loss to Cameroon therefore leaves Nigeria facing a more difficult route to Brazil 2027, with the team now required to navigate the additional qualification stages to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
