Police Report Reveals Threats Against Messi, Ronaldo

Argentina captain Lionel Messi reportedly received the highest number of death threats involving footballers during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a newly released United States police report reviewed by Spanish media.

According to Ireporter Online, the report documented several security incidents handled by the FBI and other international law enforcement agencies during the seven-week tournament, involving players, match officials and stadiums.

One of the major security concerns reportedly emerged ahead of Argentina’s group-stage fixture against Jordan. Authorities were alerted to an alleged plan targeting Messi and involving an attack on the stadium. The threat prompted security agencies to intensify measures around the venue and the Argentine team.

Additional threats were reportedly recorded before Argentina’s last-16 encounter with Egypt. Authorities also investigated claims that explosive devices had been placed around the stadium, but searches conducted by security personnel found no such devices, with the report later identifying the threat as a hoax.

Messi was not the only global football star mentioned in the security investigations. FIFA reportedly contacted the FBI after a suspicious individual repeatedly sought information about Cristiano Ronaldo’s whereabouts during the tournament.

Houston police subsequently arrested the individual at the hotel where Portugal’s squad was staying. Another person was reportedly arrested in Toronto after attempting to approach Ronaldo at the team’s accommodation, later telling officers that he wanted a photograph with the Portugal captain.

Match officials were also exposed to serious security concerns during the competition. French referee François Letexier reportedly received thousands of abusive messages on WhatsApp following the controversial Argentina-Egypt match, while VAR official Willy Delajod was also subjected to online abuse.

Following the threats, authorities reportedly increased security measures around the homes and families of the two French officials.

The incidents have renewed attention on the security challenges surrounding major international sporting events and the risks faced by high-profile footballers and officials amid heightened online hostility.
