Fayose Links Nigeria’s Population Growth To Lack Of Electricity

Former Ekiti State Governor and newly appointed Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) board, Ayodele Fayose, has linked inadequate electricity supply in rural communities to early nights and what he described as rising population growth.

According to Ireporter Online, Fayose made the remarks on Friday in Abuja during an interview with ARISE Television shortly after his inauguration as chairman of the REA board.

The former governor argued that the absence of reliable electricity in many rural areas limits residents’ access to evening activities and entertainment, leaving families with few options for recreation after nightfall.

Fayose suggested that improved electricity supply could transform social life in rural communities by creating opportunities for nightlife, entertainment and other forms of recreation outside the home.

He explained that many residents reportedly retire early because darkness sets in soon after evening, while the limited entertainment options available encourage people to remain indoors.

According to Fayose, addressing the electricity deficit would not only improve living conditions but also stimulate social and economic activities in rural areas.

He maintained that access to electricity could give residents more opportunities to engage in productive and recreational activities during the evening, while also contributing to broader rural development.

The former governor’s comments came as he assumed leadership of the REA board, with the agency responsible for promoting electricity access in underserved and rural communities across Nigeria.
