Peter Obi Reveals How He Saved Anambra Millions On Renovation, Travel

The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has revealed how he reduced the cost of governance during his tenure as governor of Anambra State by cutting what he described as unnecessary expenditure.

According to Ireporter Online, Obi said he avoided wasteful spending and travelled without the large official entourages often associated with public office holders, allowing the state to save significant resources.

The former governor disclosed this in a statement on Monday, where he highlighted some of the measures he said he implemented while in office.

Obi claimed that he rejected what he considered inflated budgets for the renovation of government facilities, insisting that the projects were eventually completed at substantially lower costs.

“When I was governor, the budget for refurbishing my office was N298 million, but I did everything with N48 million. There was also a budget of N486 million to refurbish my house, but I completed everything with N81 million,” he said.

The NDC candidate also discussed his approach to official travels, saying he chose not to travel with large delegations when carrying out government assignments.

Obi said that although a governor could ordinarily travel with about 30 people, he travelled alone in many instances because, according to him, the invitations were directed to him and not to members of a large entourage.

“As a governor, you are supposed to travel with 30 people to several places. Over the years I was governor, I didn’t use 16 percent of my travel allowance because I wasn’t travelling with anybody. I was the only person invited; nobody invited them,” he said.

He argued that Nigeria could achieve better results if its limited resources were redirected from unnecessary expenditure into productive sectors capable of improving the welfare of citizens.

Obi maintained that responsible management of public funds should remain a priority as the country seeks to address its economic and developmental challenges.
