Reports indicate that one of the pilots had inadequate rest the night before the flight. Roughly thirty minutes after takeoff, the captain requested permission from the co-pilot to take a brief rest, which was granted.
However, the co-pilot, who assumed control of the aircraft, also succumbed to sleep.
Following the co-pilot’s last recorded communication, attempts by the Jakarta area control center to establish contact with the aircraft went unanswered.
It took twenty-eight minutes for the pilot to awaken and realize the situation. He promptly roused his colleague, responded to calls from Jakarta, and corrected the flight’s trajectory.
Despite causing a series of navigation errors, the Airbus A320 safely transported its 153 passengers and four flight attendants during the two-hour-and-35-minute flight.
M. Kristi Endah Murni, Air Transport Director-General, announced that the transport ministry had strongly reprimanded Batik Air and emphasized the importance of airlines being vigilant about their crews’ rest periods.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated by Indonesia’s transport ministry, with Batik Air affirming its adherence to an adequate rest policy and commitment to implementing safety recommendations. The pilots involved have been temporarily suspended, and the aircraft landed safely after the incident.
