Police Officer Allegedly Cuts Off Wife’s Hand In Plateau

A disturbing incident has emerged from Plateau State involving a police officer identified as Ibrahim Shagari, who is under investigation for reportedly cutting off his wife’s hand during an argument over money. The wife, Hauwa Shagari, recounted the incident in an interview with Channels TV from her hospital bed, where she is currently undergoing treatment and recovery. She described her husband’s behavior as typically exacerbated by alcohol consumption, leading to verbal abuse and occasional threats.

Hauwa revealed that on the day of the incident, she was attempting to manage her intoxicated husband and guide him to rest when he unexpectedly attacked her with a sharp cutlass, resulting in the loss of her hand. She emphasized that while they had disagreements in the past, physical violence had never been a part of their relationship.

Government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Health, Women’s Affairs and Social Development, and the Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, visited Hauwa at the Plateau Specialist Hospital to provide support and assistance.

In response to the incident, the Plateau Command of the Nigeria Police Force has initiated the trial of Ibrahim Shagari for domestic violence. Additionally, the Plateau State Government has pledged to support Hauwa Shagari and her children’s welfare.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Caroline Dafu, condemned the act, highlighting the increasing prevalence of gender-based violence and stressing the need for concerted efforts to address such atrocities.
