A Facebook post circulating in Nigeria since October 2023 claims that Nollywood actor John Okafor, widely known as “Mr Ibu,” has passed away.

The post announces the news, stating, “Hello everyone am here to let you know that JOHN OKAFOR POPULAR KNW AS MR IBU JUST LOST HIS LIFE FEW MINUTES AGO”.

This claim has also surfaced on other social media platforms here and here, with users expressing condolences.

John Okafor is a renowned actor, particularly recognized for his comedic roles in movies. He has appeared in numerous films, including “Mr Ibu” (2004), “Police Recruit” (2003), “Mr Ibu in London” (2004), “Ibu in Prison” (2006), and “Keziah” (2007).

In October 2023, the veteran actor posted on social media, revealing that he was unwell and facing the possibility of leg amputation, seeking financial support.

But has Okafor died? We checked.

Despite Okafor’s significant popularity in Nigeria, there is no evidence of his death, and news reports on the matter have not been found. On November 6, media outlets reported that Okafor was alive, citing a statement from his family.

The statement, published on his Instagram handle, clarified that Okafor had undergone seven surgeries, including an amputation, and urged Nigerians to continue offering support.

As of the current publication, Okafor is in the process of recovery, contradicting the assertions on social media. On November 9, his former manager provided additional information about his illness, stating that he is “gradually healing.”
