Popular ‘Obidient’ Charly Boy Advocates Coup In Nigeria
While Nigeria has strongly condemned recent coups in Africa, Charles Oputa, known as Charly Boy, a controversial Nigerian singer, took to social media to express a desire for a similar outcome in Nigeria.
In a post on the social networking platform X (formerly Twitter), Charly Boy did not explicitly mention a coup but suggested that he wished for something similar to what had happened in four African countries that recently experienced coups.
He said, “Oh lord how can we be praying in Nigeria and you are answering prayers in Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.”
The four countries mentioned by Charly Boy recently experienced coups, with Niger and Gabon witnessing coups in the last two months. All four countries are now under military rule.
Although Charly Boy did not provide a specific reason for his statement, he actively supported opposition candidate Peter Obi in the February presidential election, which was won by Bola Tinubu of the ruling party. Mr. Obi is still challenging the election results in court.
Nigeria has a history of military rule and only returned to civilian rule in 1999. The country’s period of military rule was marked by repressive measures, draconian laws, and human rights abuses.
In recent coups, senior military officers in Gabon announced that they had taken over the government due to concerns about the credibility of the recent elections in the country. Niger also experienced a coup, with presidential guards overthrowing the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum. Both countries faced sanctions and suspensions from regional and continental organizations.
