Power Crisis In Osun! IBEDC Workers Shut Down Operations After Sh**king Mass Layoffs

The protest, which kicked off early in Osogbo, Ede, and Ilesa, resulted in significant disruptions to electricity supply, particularly affecting the state capital, Osogbo. Offices at Ilaje in Ilesa, Oja Timi, Ede Business Hub, and the Ikirun Business Unit were all locked as workers abandoned their posts in solidarity.

A senior member of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization, revealed that the protest was sparked by the termination of several team leaders who failed to meet revenue targets.

“The protest stems from the dismissal of multiple team leaders due to their inability to meet the revenue targets set by IBEDC. This has directly caused the blackout across Osun State,” the union official stated.

In response to the protests, the IBEDC management, through a statement signed by Angela Olanrewaju, Coordinating Head of Corporate Services, refuted claims that workers had gone on strike. The company clarified that the demonstration was a picket organized by the NUEE, not an official strike.

“We urge our customers and stakeholders across our franchise areas to disregard reports of an official strike. The recent activity was a picket organized by the NUEE over alleged unfair dismissals,” the statement read.

The company maintained that the affected staff members were dismissed due to consistently poor performance, in line with IBEDC’s Conditions of Service. “Proper procedures were followed in these dismissals,” Olanrewaju emphasized.

She further assured that despite the current economic challenges, IBEDC remains committed to staff welfare, noting that “the company has consistently paid full salaries to all employees each month.”
