Real Reason Why I Fell Out With Obaseki – Shaibu Opens Up

The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has disclosed the reason for his strained relationship with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Speaking as a guest on Channels TV’s “Politics Today” on Tuesday, Mr. Shaibu, a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) like Governor Obaseki, revealed that their fallout is attributed to his declared interest in contesting the September 2024 governorship election in the state.

Despite facing strong opposition from Governor Obaseki, who seems to prefer another candidate, Mr. Shaibu remains determined to pursue his gubernatorial ambition.

The deputy governor’s political aspirations are considered a primary factor in the ongoing disagreement between him and Governor Obaseki.

Despite initially supporting Governor Obaseki as his successor in 2016, the relationship between Mr. Oshiomhole and the governor turned sour.

Allegedly, Mr. Oshiomhole resisted Governor Obaseki’s efforts to secure the APC ticket for his second term, leading to a political fallout. Governor Obaseki subsequently defected to the PDP, secured the party’s ticket, and won the September 2020 governorship election in Edo State.

Deputy Governor Shaibu revealed that, while he is cautious about rebuilding ties with Mr. Oshiomhole, whom he considers his “political father,” he is pleased that Governor Obaseki has started inviting the former governor to certain state government functions.
