Why I Can’t Use New, Old Abia Government Houses – Otti
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has responded to a PREMIUM TIMES report concerning his decision to operate from his private residence rather than the newly built multi-billion naira Government House in Umuahia, the state capital.
Premium Times had reported on how Governor Otti abandoned both the New Government House and Old Government House Complexes, running the government from his country home.

While lawyers stated that Otti’s action was not illegal, it raised questions about the use or abandonment of public properties.
Governor Otti, through his spokesperson, Kazie Uko, addressed reporters on Tuesday, stating that he chose to operate from his private residence to save costs instead of using public funds for renovations.
He argued that both the old and new government complexes were in bad condition and required significant funds for refurbishment.

Otti claimed to sacrifice his personal comfort to attend to the state’s urgent needs, citing the incomplete status of the new governor’s lodge commissioned by the previous administration.
Despite video evidence provided by PREMIUM TIMES, Otti contested that the new Government House building was hastily commissioned without completion and with various issues, such as dangling cables and lack of power supply.
However, a PREMIUM TIMES reporter who visited on October 3 observed no signs of human activity within the complex.
When questioned about the six-month period and whether it was enough to rebuild the Government House, Otti explained that he prioritized addressing emergencies in the state, such as unpaid pensions, civil servant salaries, and dilapidated hospitals.
The governor remained silent on the financial burden placed on the state government due to his decision to run the government from his private residence.
