Retired DIG Cecilia Ugowe Honoured by IGP As She Turns 90

The commendation was contained in a goodwill message issued to mark Ugowe’s 90th birthday, where the police leadership celebrated her decades of service, courage, and dedication to national policing. The Force noted that her journey remains a powerful testament to professionalism and perseverance within the institution.

In the message conveyed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Nigeria Police Force acknowledged Ugowe as a historic figure whose rise through the ranks came at a period when leadership opportunities for women were severely limited. Despite the challenges, she distinguished herself through discipline, merit, and unwavering commitment to duty.

Her career was marked by several groundbreaking achievements, as she became the first female officer to serve as Commissioner of Police, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Secretary, and ultimately the first woman to attain the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria.

Beyond the offices she occupied, the Force emphasized that Ugowe’s enduring legacy lies in the doors she opened for future generations. Her service not only expanded opportunities for women but also reinforced professionalism and integrity within the policing system, proving that leadership is defined by competence and dedication rather than tradition.
