Revealed: The Root Causes Of Kidnapping In Nigeria – Insights From A Retired General
Amidst the ongoing wave of kidnappings perpetrated by terrorists, particularly highlighted by the recent abduction of over 600 individuals within the span of eight days, including school students, children, and women in Borno, Kaduna, and Sokoto states, Retired Major General and Security Consultant, Obidah Ethan, has emphasized the urgent need to address the inherent gaps within Nigeria’s security sector………READ ALSO 85-Year-Old Man Arrested For Allegedly Kidnapping 3-Year-Old Boy In Kano
Recalling the alarming incidents, including the abduction of over 300 women and children from IDP camps in Borno on March 4, 2024, followed by the kidnapping of 287 students in Kaduna on March 8 and 15 students in Sokoto on the subsequent day, Gen. Ethan stressed the necessity for a comprehensive approach involving all segments of society in tackling the menace.
Speaking on the theme “Realism of Kidnapping in Nigeria” at the 40th Anniversary of the SSC Course (Short Service Combatant Course) 25 of the Nigeria Defence Academy, Gen. Ethan underscored the imperative for innovative strategies beyond traditional military and police responses.
He emphasized the importance of proactive measures and modern training techniques to equip security forces in effectively countering evolving criminal tactics introduced by terrorists and bandits. Gen. Ethan also highlighted the significance of fostering unity and resilience among Nigerians amidst the prevailing security challenges.
In his address, Chairman of the occasion, Retired Gen. Paul Tarfa, urged Nigerians not to lose hope but to remain steadfast in the face of adversity, drawing parallels with historical challenges faced by other nations, including the United States. He reiterated the pivotal role of the military in safeguarding the nation’s security and emphasized the need for collective sacrifice and unity in addressing the prevailing threats.
The event also saw the election of a new executive to lead the affairs of the SSC Course 25, with Major Gen. Sulaiman Aliyu assuming the presidency and Captain Karga (Rtd) serving as the Secretary of Friends Club 2584, reflecting a commitment to collective action and camaraderie among military veterans.
