account (NRNIA).

In a circular released on Friday and signed by W.J. Kanya, acting director of the trade and exchange department, the CBN detailed that the NRNOA allows non-resident Nigerians (NRNs) to transfer their foreign earnings to Nigeria while managing funds in both local and foreign currencies.

“The NRNOA enables NRNs to remit funds and manage finances in foreign currency as well as Naira, while the NRNIA allows them to invest in Nigeria’s assets using either currency,” the circular stated.

Benefits of the New Accounts
The CBN highlighted that these accounts will enhance access for diasporans to engage with the Nigerian economy, thereby bolstering their contributions to the country’s socio-economic development.

“NRNs can utilize their NRNIA to invest in Nigeria’s Diaspora Bond and other locally issued debt instruments targeted specifically at the Nigerian diaspora and the general investing public,” the CBN added.

These accounts will serve as secure channels for NRNs to manage their funds directly, minimizing their dependence on intermediaries for local commitments and obligations.

Beginning January 1, 2025, eligible NRNs will be able to access these accounts, provided they meet know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, which will be clarified in FAQs to be published soon.

This initiative complements the CBN’s earlier announcement on October 24, 2024, regarding the introduction of a non-resident bank verification number (NRBVN) to assist Nigerians abroad in completing KYC processes remotely, while upholding stringent global anti-money laundering (AML) standards.
