Speaking at his Ila-Orangun residence in Osun State during a visit from Ekiti State University (EKSU) Vice Chancellor Professor Babatola Ayodele and other key officials, Akande lamented that many graduates fail to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy.

“If you want to compete globally, you cannot afford to lag behind. Universities should avoid producing graduates who cannot add value to the economy,” he remarked.

Akande further asserted that education is just the beginning of the journey, stressing the importance of continuous learning and adapting to meet global standards.

The EKSU delegation highlighted the university’s recognition as Nigeria’s top state university by Times Higher Education. Professor Ayodele noted that the institution mandates skill acquisition for all students, equipping them with practical knowledge to thrive after graduation.

“No graduate leaves EKSU without mastering a relevant skill, preparing them for entrepreneurship and reducing dependence on white-collar jobs,” Ayodele stated.

Akande’s comments underscore a pressing need to revamp Nigeria’s educational system to produce graduates who are ready to face real-world challenges and contribute significantly to national growth.
