This decision was revealed in a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor. The statement read:

“It is hereby announced for the information of the General Public that the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the change of the name of ‘Edo State University, Uzairue,’ to now be known as ‘Edo University, Iyamho’ with immediate effect.

“Accordingly, all documentation in respect of the Institution henceforth shall reflect the above change.”

The university’s name has been a point of contention over the years. Initially named Edo State University, Iyamho, by its founder and former governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, it was later renamed Edo State University, Uzairue, by the immediate past Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Governor Okpebholo’s decision restores the university’s original name, honoring its founding history and ties to Oshiomhole’s hometown of Iyamho.
