I’m Not Stirring Unrest – Gov. Mohammed Hits Back At Presidency Over Tax Reform Criticism
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has responded strongly to the presidency’s allegations that he is inciting unrest over the Tax Reform Bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s…I’m Not Stirring Unrest – Gov. Mohammed Hits Back At Presidency Over Tax Reform Criticism
administration.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed clarified that his remarks were made as a concerned citizen and a public servant, providing honest feedback on the risks of implementing poor policies.
The Governor had previously criticized the proposed Tax Reform Bills, describing them as unfair to the North and potentially damaging to Nigeria’s unity. He argued that the reforms appeared to favor certain regions over others, leaving the North at a disadvantage.
In response, President Tinubu’s media adviser, Sunday Dare, accused Governor Mohammed of making inflammatory comments and urged him to focus on improving the challenges facing his state rather than issuing threats against the president.
Governor Mohammed, however, dismissed the claims of mischief, emphasizing that his comments were meant to warn against policies that could exacerbate the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians. He noted that the remarks were intended to encourage dialogue and advocate for inclusive, equitable reforms that would address the unique socio-economic challenges of all regions.
The Governor further pointed out that his stance on the tax reform was shared by several other APC governors, suggesting that his concerns were not isolated but reflected a broader national sentiment. He questioned why the government had not consulted stakeholders before pushing the reform through, citing the National Economic Council’s recommendation to revisit the proposal as a missed opportunity for constructive dialogue.
On accusations about Bauchi’s poverty rate, Governor Mohammed’s aide defended the state’s progress, highlighting the challenges of insecurity and resource limitations. Despite these hurdles, the administration has made significant strides in delivering key development projects that have positively impacted the people of Bauchi.
The statement concluded by reaffirming that Governor Mohammed enjoys strong support from the people of Bauchi, whose confidence in his leadership continues to grow.
