Rivers Govt Makes Revelation On Pro-Wike Commissioners Resignation

“Whatever their reason, I will like to say that the governor did not force, compel or ask anyone to leave,” the state’s Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

“Those who left did so on their own volition, and according to their reasons.”

The commissioner explained that a structural firm had verified the uninhabitability of the Rivers State Assembly Complex, prompting the governor’s decision to demolish it. Johnson noted that Governor Wike acknowledged the compromised state of the complex, emphasizing that his principal is committed to peace and is actively working to quell the crisis.

Over the past three months, Rivers State has become a stage for political upheaval, with the state House of Assembly resembling a “boxing ring.”

The discord between Wike and Fubara led to a division among lawmakers, resulting in 27 defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a party where Wike currently serves in the central government as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The conflict gave rise to parallel legislative sessions, a plot to impeach the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a series of resignations by commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet who were aligned with Wike.

Despite interventions by President Bola Tinubu and other elder statesmen, the political turmoil in the oil-rich South-South state appears to have no resolution in sight.
