Russia Puts Ukrainian President Zelensky On Wanted List

Amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Russia has taken a significant step by opening a criminal case against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and placing him on a wanted list, as reported by the state news agency TASS on Saturday, May 5. TASS revealed that the Russian Interior Ministry’s database listed Zelensky as wanted, though specific details were not provided.

In response, Ukraine’s foreign ministry issued a statement asserting that Russian President Vladimir Putin is also subject to arrest under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. The statement emphasized that unlike Russia’s announcements, the ICC’s warrant for Putin’s arrest on suspicion of war crimes is legitimate and applicable in 123 countries.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry characterized Russia’s action as a display of desperation by the Russian state machine and propaganda, highlighting the absence of alternative measures to attract attention.

This move by Russia is part of a pattern seen since the onset of the conflict with Ukraine in February 2022, with Russia issuing arrest warrants for several Ukrainian and European politicians.

Notably, in February, Russian police issued arrest warrants for Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Lithuania’s culture minister, and members of the previous Latvian parliament, accusing them of destroying Soviet-era monuments.

Furthermore, Russia also targeted the International Criminal Court prosecutor who prepared Putin’s war crimes warrant last year, issuing an arrest warrant against them.
