Following town hall meetings held across the six geo-political zones of the country, where the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) presented their proposals, state governments have put forward their counter-offers.
While the NLC and TUC proposed minimum wages ranging from N447,000 to N709,000 per month, state governments offered different figures based on their economic realities.
Here’s a breakdown of the proposed minimum wages by some states:
- Lagos State: Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, stated that Lagos State has implemented a minimum wage of N41,500, without specifying a new proposed figure.
- Plateau State: The Plateau State government proposed minimum wages of N60,000, N70,000, and N80,000 per month.
- Nasarawa State: Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, requested to renegotiate the minimum wage, citing economic realities. No specific figure was mentioned.
- Niger State: The Niger State government expressed readiness to pay any amount fixed by the committee.
- Bauchi State: Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, proposed a minimum wage of N45,000 per month.
- Adamawa State: Adamawa State government proposed a minimum wage of N45,000 per month.
- Gombe State: Representatives of the Gombe State government suggested a minimum wage of N60,000 per month.

- Katsina State: Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, stated the state’s commitment to abide by the committee’s decision on the minimum wage.
These proposals come amidst ongoing negotiations led by the Federal Government’s Tripartite Committee, aiming to establish a new minimum wage. The current minimum wage of N30,000 took effect in April 2019, and discussions are underway to implement a new wage structure this year under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
