Senate Assures Nigerians: 2024 Census Set To Proceed As Planned Amidst Commissioner Nominee Screening
Amidst the nation’s anticipation of the forthcoming population and housing census scheduled for November this year, the Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the successful conduct of the exercise.
During the screening of 17 out of the 19 commissioner-nominees for the National Population Commission (NPC), chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi, the Senate provided assurances that the census would proceed as scheduled. Notably, many of the nominees are returning for a second stint, bringing valuable experience and continuity to the commission.
The last census conducted in Nigeria dates back to 2006, leaving the nation reliant on estimated figures for many years. Despite previous delays, the Senate remains steadfast in its determination to facilitate a comprehensive headcount, critical for effective national planning.
Senator Ningi emphasized the urgency of the census, highlighting its pivotal role in informing development initiatives and resource allocation. He stressed the need for political will from the government to ensure the census’s success and urged President Tinubu to promptly announce the exercise’s commencement.
Echoing Senator Ningi’s sentiments, Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Kwarra, expressed gratitude for the long-awaited screening process, underscoring the significance of the census in shaping Nigeria’s future.
As the screening process continues, the nominees have been urged to prioritize their responsibilities to the nation, setting aside regional and ethnic biases for the collective benefit of all Nigerians.
Among the nominees, Sa’adatu Dogon Bauchi of Kaduna State, representing the female contingent, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and pledged unwavering dedication to ensuring the census’s success.
With the assurance of a committed workforce and the impending census on the horizon, Nigerians can anticipate a comprehensive and inclusive headcount that will lay the groundwork for informed policymaking and sustainable development.
