Shehu Sani Reacts As Northern Elders Criticise Tinubu

Shehu Sani

Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, expressed lamentation over what he sees as the wastage of “trillions” of Naira on insecurity during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari and the immediate past security chiefs.

Sani criticized the failure of the security chiefs, particularly those from the Northern region, to effectively address the security challenges despite the significant financial resources invested.

He pointed out that despite their underwhelming performance, Buhari repeatedly extended their tenure during his presidency. Sani further acknowledged the right of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) to criticize President Bola Tinubu regarding the security situation in the region.

Posting on X, Sani wrote: “Northern Leaders have the constitutional right to criticize the President and hold him to account on the security situation in the North; but it’s too early to forget how all the key security and Defence positions in country were held by Northerners for eight years but failed to end the scourge of killings and kidnappings in the north. Trillions wasted with no result, and the then President kept extending their tenure in office.”

In the aftermath of the tragic incident where a military drone mistakenly killed villagers in Tudun Diri, Kaduna State, during the Maulud festival celebration, there has been widespread condemnation and backlash.

The military acknowledged that the tragic mistake resulted from an error in intelligence. Usman Yusuf, a chieftain of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), criticized Bola Tinubu, stating that Tinubu’s words, deeds, and body language suggest a lack of interest in addressing security issues.

The criticism reflects the growing concerns about the security situation in the country and the need for effective leadership to address these challenges.

He had said, “Our President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, from his words, deeds, and body language, is not interested in security. All he’s interested in is the economy, where the money is, and he’s planted his people. Security, banditry, and others appear irritant to him.

“We don’t see the president hands-on with our security. Our military is not supervised by civilian authority; they’ve gone rogue, dropping bombs on our people, and they’re not answerable to anybody.”
