functionalities to facilitate access to government support programs.

During a press conference in Abuja on Friday, Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Director of Card Management Services at NIMC, stated that the card is specifically created to improve the delivery of government services, particularly for vulnerable Nigerians.

He mentioned that the card would resolve issues related to effectively identifying beneficiaries of government programs, creating a secure and reliable platform for service access.

Iwegbu remarked, “The second initiative focuses on ensuring that government services are efficiently delivered. There have been obstacles in identifying individuals who participate in government interventions.”

“The government-to-people card addresses this need by allowing government agencies and the private sector to securely identify recipients of such services, based on the national identification number card,” he added.

He also noted that this initiative aligns with NIMC’s goal of enrolling Nigerians and providing them with a versatile identification card.

These new card programs aim to tackle social and economic challenges by integrating payment functionalities with identity verification at their core.

“The programs will assist Nigerians,” he noted. “It’s a three-in-one card that provides access to government services, functions as a form of ID, and enables financial transactions.”

He emphasized that the card would bolster security by allowing authorities to monitor fraudulent activities more effectively.

Iwegbu explained that the government-to-people card would be customized for each Ministry, Department, and Agency that chooses to implement it, ensuring it is driven by specific programs.

This initiative aims to guarantee the effective delivery of government services and initiatives to vulnerable populations across the nation.

In collaboration with the Nigeria Interbank Settlement Systems, AfriGO, Data Mining Company, and other stakeholders, the NIMC plans to launch digital cards equipped with multiple wallets to boost financial inclusion and enhance Nigeria’s GDP.

These cards will enable Nigerians to access services across various MDAs and serve as a platform for students to secure government loans.

Farmers registered under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have already begun utilizing these cards for accessing government services, including agricultural loans, seedlings, and other resources intended to improve food production and security.

The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, highlighted that the biometric-enabled cards align with President Bola Tinubu’s eight-point agenda and are designed to meet the socio-economic needs of Nigerians.

Coker-Odusote stated at the NIMC headquarters in Abuja that the cards will be available to citizens both domestically and abroad, allowing them to handle various transactions such as paying utility bills, accessing transportation services, and shopping.

“The cards are operational online and offline, providing services for unbanked citizens in rural areas and assisting businesses requiring government support. Nigerians will no longer need intermediaries to access these services,” she said.

She assured that the cards come with advanced security features, making them tamper-proof and preventing fraudulent beneficiaries from availing themselves of government programs.

Ebehijie Momoh, Managing Director of AfriGO, described the card as a revolutionary domestic solution set to transform Nigeria’s economy.

“The digital card represents a local solution focused on financial inclusion, ensuring cost-effectiveness and transparency within the system. It guarantees data sovereignty and autonomy, which are essential for driving economic growth,” she noted.

Momoh added that the card would support the government’s cashless policy, ensuring that financial transactions remain within the domestic economy.
