The senator’s suggestion followed widespread criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s recent loan request. Tinubu had written to the National Assembly seeking approval for an external loan of $2.2 billion, sparking public concern over the potential misuse of borrowed funds.

During an appearance on Channels TV Politics Today, Ibrahim argued that such extreme measures might be necessary to address the trust deficit surrounding the handling of public funds.

When asked about Nigerians’ skepticism toward borrowing, given the history of embezzlement, Ibrahim said:
“If you list 50 items to which you want to allocate $100 billion and pass a law stating that anyone who diverts funds for personal use will face public execution, people will think twice before stealing.”

He emphasized the importance of strict accountability measures to ensure that borrowed funds are used solely for their intended purposes and to rebuild public trust in governance.

The senator’s remarks have sparked debate on the practicality and morality of such measures, with some agreeing that stronger deterrents are needed while others caution against extreme punitive actions.
