Super Falcons Receive Squad Boost Ahead Of WAFCON Clash

The arrival of the two players completes head coach Justine Madugu’s 25-player squad, as Nigeria intensifies preparations ahead of the continental tournament.

Abiodun and Monday were initially expected to join the team earlier in the week, but a cancelled flight from the United States delayed their arrival. The travel disruption also prevented both players from featuring in Nigeria’s final warm-up match against Tanzania’s Twiga Stars, which the Falcons won 2-1.

Abiodun was part of the Super Falcons squad at the previous WAFCON tournament, while Monday narrowly missed out on selection for that campaign.

With the full squad now assembled, Nigeria will move from Casablanca to Rabat on Friday, July 24, where the defending champions will play all their Group C matches.

The 10-time African champions will begin their title defence against Malawi’s Scorchers on Tuesday, July 28, before facing Zambia and Egypt in their remaining group fixtures.

The 2026 WAFCON tournament officially begins on Sunday, July 26, with hosts Morocco taking on Kenya at 9 p.m., following the opening fixture between Algeria and Senegal at 6 p.m. (WAT).

Nigeria will be aiming to retain the trophy and strengthen their dominance in African women’s football as they begin another campaign for continental glory.
