Suspected Smugglers Launch Violent Attack On Customs Outstation In Kebbi, Escape With Seized Rice

In a concerning incident in Kebbi state, suspected smugglers launched an audacious attack on a Nigeria Customs Service outstation in Yauri. According to Superintendent of Customs Mohammed Salisu, the attack occurred on Thursday, March 21, 2024, when officers intercepted smuggling activities at Yauri Waterside. Despite successfully seizing 41 bags of foreign parboiled rice, the officers faced a violent response from aggrieved smugglers who mobilized a mob to assault the outpost.

The swift intervention of Kebbi Command and sister security agencies helped quell the situation, but not before significant damage was inflicted. The Officer in charge sustained a hand injury, and one AK47 rifle was briefly stolen but later recovered. However, the attackers managed to abscond with 29 of the seized rice bags.

Salisu further revealed that the assailants vandalized personnel vehicles, as well as essential infrastructure at the outstation, including AC units, chairs, tables, windows, and doors.

In response to the incident, Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, engaged with Customs officials to discuss the way forward. Additionally, Customs Area Controller, Iheanacho Ojike, coordinated with the state Commissioner of Police to facilitate arrests and initiate investigations aimed at bringing the perpetrators to justice.
