TCN Speaks On Resuming Power Supply To Niger Republic

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared its preparedness to recommence the supply of electricity to Niger Republic once the ban on the neighbouring country is lifted by Nigeria.

Mr. Ganiyu Aliyu, the General Manager for Transmission in the Kaduna Region, made this statement while addressing reporters in Kaduna on the region’s accomplishments for the current year.

He clarified that the company, with the capacity increase it has accomplished, is capable of providing electricity to the neighbouring country without impacting its power supply in the region.

Aliyu said: “We have increased our capacity very well. In fact, I can say authoritatively that we are comfortable here in Kaduna.

“There’s something we call redundancy in power system. It’s like you having two phones: one is your hot line; another is on standby.

“In case we have any trouble, we have made this place capable that we can transfer our load from one transformer to another transformer.”

The general manager affirmed that TCN’s service delivery has witnessed significant improvement this year, attributed to the implementation of new transmission projects aimed at enhancing electricity supply in the country.

Aliyu stated that TCN has successfully executed numerous capital reinforcement projects across the national transmission network. These projects include the installation of a 100MVA 132/33kV transformer in Birnin Kebbi substation, the introduction of a new distance protection relay for the 330kV Jos line, and the replacement of the Bucholz relay valve seal on the 90MVA 330/132/33kV transformer T2A.

Other projects encompass the construction of a 1x150MVA 330/132/33kV substation at Kalgo with 8x330kV line bays and a 1x100MVA 132/33kV substation with 3nos. 33kV outgoing feeders, the establishment of a double circuit line from Kaduna to Jos, and emergency erosion control works on Tower 122 Kaduna-Zaria 132kV transmission line, among several others.

Aliyu emphasized that these projects align with the Federal Government’s agenda to revamp the power sector. Despite facing external challenges such as vandalism and encroachment on transmission installations, TCN has achieved remarkable milestones throughout the year and continues to undertake new initiatives.
