The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the state government a 72-hour ultimatum to settle the outstanding salaries for local government workers for November 2024. staff—have yet to receive their November pay.
In a statement issued in Ilorin, signed by the union’s secretary, Isiah Elachochi Eugene, the NLC highlighted that workers from several unions, including the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), and the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), are affected by the delay.
The NLC has called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to intervene promptly, urging him to direct the relevant authorities to resolve the salary backlog without further delay.
The union has made it clear that they will not accept the payment of December salaries until the November wages are fully cleared. Failure to meet this demand by Thursday, December 19, 2024, will lead the NLC to invoke relevant labor laws and declare a statewide shutdown.
The NLC further emphasized the importance of timely salary payments as a critical aspect of workers’ welfare, insisting that any disruptions in payment could trigger industrial unrest.
The statement reads: “It may surprise His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, that over 75% of workers, the majority of whom are staff of the 16 local government areas of the state, have not received their November 2024 salaries. We are calling on the state government to address this issue urgently to avoid industrial unrest.”
The union also warned that without immediate action, they will be forced to shut down the state until full payment of November salaries is made.
