Despite the establishment of HOSTCOM (Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas) to oversee the implementation of these funds, communities across Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states have protested against what they perceive as manipulation and unfair representation. Leaders like Dr. Benjamin Tamaranebi have raised concerns about the exclusionary practices of oil firms, urging regulatory bodies to take action.

The ongoing disputes reflect a deep-rooted issue of ethnic and political divisions, further exacerbated by the arbitrary selection of community representatives by the oil companies.
